• The best 4×4 just got better
• Prices starting from £71,295
• Now weighs 420kg less than before

The Range Rover is one of the UK’s most iconic cars. Its appeal is not limited to Blighty, however – exports of the Rangey are booming, with particular success in the USA and China. So, it’s no surprise many see this launch of an all-new model as the most important event of the Paris Motor Show.

What is it?

We hardly need to tell you, but the Range Rover has long been the world’s ultimate 4×4. For 2013 it is set to take a step further upmarket, with a greater focus on luxury and a price tag to match. But, don’t think that means it has become less capable – a Range Rover has to be able to perform on and off road.

What’s it like?

The biggest news here is that the Rangey has been to boot camp. Yes, thanks to a diet of aluminium, it now weighs 420kg less than its predecessor – about the weight of two Tigers. This has resulted in an impressive hike in economy and performance, with the 5-litre supercharged V8 model able to hit 62mph in 5.1 seconds. Most customers will be happy with the 3-litre V6 turbo diesel, which will also be available as a Hybrid for the first time, with an emissions target of just 169g/km of CO2. It has also taken some tips from the trendy Evoque, most noticeably in its redesigned headlights and grille.

What’s it up against?

The Range Rover’s closest rivals are the Mercedes GL-Class, BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne. The GL is the most rugged – and there’s a new one on the way next year – while the X5 and Cayenne offer great performance, but are less luxurious and struggle off road. Bentley is also planning its first-ever 4×4, which will have a superb interior, but is almost certain to be the most expensive 4×4 too.

When can I buy it?

You can order it now. At least you can if you have between £71,295 and £98,395 burning a hole in your chinos. First deliveries won’t be until next year though, so you’ll have to pore over the brochures and reviews until then.
